The fastest going trend by far is popcorn removal. Popcorn application was extremely popular up until the late 90's but now people want flat, clean ceilings. Some real estate agents are recommending popcorn removal to sell houses quicker. Once we get done removing the popcorn you would never know that their was ever popcorn there to begin with!
Popcorn removal is a notoriously messy job so the key to any popcorn removal project is the prep work. Thick plastic is laid down on the floors that extends up the walls to ensure the popcorn is contained. Painters plastic is put on anything left in the work zone and air ducts are tapped up.
Once the popcorn is off its time for the most important step. The fine tuning of the exposed drywall so no imperfections are visible once it is all painted. Sometimes a lot of compound is needed in areas to get the spots smooth. This is the one step that cannot be rushed.
Once all the compound is up in the areas that needed it, it is time to start the sanding process. This can potentially be the messiest part of the job because compound dust can get anyway. We use dustless sanders that are connected to HEPA vacuums to minimize the dust in the air. However, hand sanding is always needed around the perimeter and hard to get to areas. Once the sanding is done the entire ceiling gets cleaned of its dust.
Its time to paint! We always apply 2 coats of a high end flat white ceiling paint to finish it off. Bigger ceiling jobs we will spray up 2 coats with backrolling after each coat. The transformation is pretty amazing.
